What is Adolescent Scoliosis?
Adolescent scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curve of the spine that develops during the teenage years, most often between ages 10 and 18. While smaller curves may only require monitoring, curves greater than 40 degrees often progress and may need surgery to prevent further deformity and safeguard long-term health.
If left untreated, severe scoliosis can affect posture, lung function, and self-esteem. Seeking care from a scoliosis specialist early on gives teens the best chance at long-term stability.
When Bracing Isn’t Enough
For some teens, bracing may temporarily slow curve progression, but surgery becomes necessary when curves are larger, continue to worsen, or create noticeable spinal imbalance. Dr. Siddiqui’s practice focuses exclusively on surgical correction for adolescents whose scoliosis requires long-term, definitive treatment.
Surgery may be recommended for teens who:
- Have curves greater than 40 degrees
- Show progression despite prior bracing
- Experience spinal imbalance that affects activity or appearance
- Need lasting correction to protect spinal health into adulthood
How We Correct Scoliosis in Teenagers
Dr. Siddiqui uses advanced techniques to correct spinal curves while prioritizing safety and long-term results. His surgical approach may include:
- Spinal fusion with instrumentation to stabilize the spine and prevent further progression
- Advanced navigation and imaging for precision during surgery
- Growth-friendly techniques in certain cases, depending on skeletal maturity
Each surgery is carefully tailored to the individual teens’ anatomy and health needs, ensuring the best chance for lasting success.
Life-Changing Results for Teens and Families
Scoliosis surgery can transform not only posture and balance, but also a teen’s confidence. Many families describe it as life-changing, relieving the burden of a progressing curve and helping their child feel comfortable in their own body again.
Recovery typically includes a short hospital stay followed by a gradual return to school and normal activities. With time, most teens resume sports, dance, and other hobbies they enjoy, stronger and more confident than before.
