Scheuermanns Disease

Scheuermann's Disease

Living with Scheuermann’s disease can be overwhelming, especially for teenagers and families who are unsure why the spine looks different or why posture seems difficult to correct. The forward rounding of the back can affect not only appearance, but also confidence, activity, and overall quality of life. For many, the uncertainty of how the curve will progress creates added worry.

At The Scoliosis & Spine Deformity Institute, our mission is to provide patients with advanced solutions for spinal deformities that require surgical expertise. Families from across Texas and around the world trust our team to deliver specialized care designed to restore balance, function, and confidence.

Our institute serves patients at three Texas locations: The Woodlands (Houston), Plano (Dallas), and Corpus Christi, with The Woodlands as our primary center. Families also travel from across the United States and abroad to seek treatment with Dr. Siddiqui. Houston’s global reputation for medical excellence makes it a trusted destination for international patients looking for specialized spine surgery.

What is Scheuermann’s Disease

Scheuermann’s disease, also known as Scheuermann’s kyphosis, develops when the vertebrae grow unevenly during adolescence. This uneven growth causes the front of the vertebrae to become wedged, leading to a rigid forward curvature of the upper or mid-back. Unlike flexible posture-related curves, Scheuermann’s disease does not improve when someone tries to stand up straight.

While the condition is typically identified during adolescence, some patients are not diagnosed until adulthood, when the spinal deformity becomes more noticeable or progresses further. For patients with moderate to severe curves, especially those greater than 40 degrees, surgical treatment may be necessary to restore spinal alignment and stability.

Recognizing the Signs of Scheuermann’s Disease

The symptoms of Scheuermann’s disease vary by severity. Common features may include:

  • A noticeable forward rounding of the upper back
  • Stiffness in the thoracic spine
  • Uneven shoulders or prominent shoulder blades
  • Fatigue during physical activity
  • Difficulty maintaining upright posture

Because Scheuermann’s kyphosis is structural, the curve will not improve with exercises or posture correction. This makes expert evaluation especially important when curves are significant or worsening.

When Surgery is Recommended

Dr. Siddiqui focuses exclusively on surgical treatment for Scheuermann’s disease when curves are severe enough to require correction. Surgery may be recommended when:

  • The curvature exceeds 40 degrees
  • The deformity continues to worsen with growth or age
  • Posture and spinal balance are significantly affected
  • Daily activities or overall function are limited by the deformity

At our institute, we do not provide observation or bracing programs. Instead, patients who meet surgical criteria are offered advanced corrective options designed to improve alignment and long-term spinal health.

Expertise You Can Trust

Treating Scheuermann’s disease requires a careful balance of precision and expertise. Dr. Saqib Siddiqui has spent more than 20 years helping patients with scoliosis, kyphosis, and other spinal deformities achieve long-term correction. His fellowship training in spine deformity surgery and experience with advanced techniques allow him to design surgical plans that are both safe and effective. Each patient receives care tailored to their unique spinal anatomy and future goals.

Restoring Confidence and Mobility

Correcting Scheuermann’s kyphosis can have lasting benefits that extend beyond spinal alignment. Many patients experience:

  • Improved posture and balance
  • A straighter, more natural appearance of the back
  • Greater endurance during activity
  • Increased confidence in daily life

Surgery is often life-changing, providing patients with renewed independence and a brighter outlook for the future. Our team is dedicated to guiding each patient through recovery and rehabilitation to ensure the best possible outcome.
